Choosing between a brightness or contrast adjustment

Brightness and contrast can be adjusted with image editing software, such as Photoshop.

To adjust the brightness in Photoshop, select Adjust from the Image menu and click Curves. Move the point on the tone curve up or down. Increasing the brightness will make the shadows lighter and increase the amount of highlighted areas. This is why colors appear washed out when the brightness level is too high.

On the other hand, contrast changes the difference between highlighted areas and shadows. Increasing the contrast will make the difference between the highlighted areas and the shadows greater. This results in a greater amount of both highlighted areas and shadows and the gradation between these areas decreases. Raising the contrast too high will cause the image to resemble a copy from an ordinary copy machine.

Brightness and contrast adjustments are different for each image, but in general, avoid raising the brightness levels without adjusting the contrast.
